From Life’s Curveball to Canada’s Laughs: Why We Built TheOneAndOnly.ca
After a life changing diagnosis, Jenn and Cam decided it was time for a new chapter. This is the real story of how a Canadian couple started a prank mail business in their 50s, learned SEO with AI, and accidentally began mailing hockey pucks.

Starting a new business in your 50s wasn’t something we planned. But life sometimes pushes you in unexpected directions.
Prefer listening? Here’s the story in my own voice.

It was a Tuesday afternoon.
I had just arrived home from work. My wife and daughter were driving back from a girls weekend in New York City. As they pulled into the driveway, my wife’s phone rang.
The doctor.
She asked if my wife was somewhere she could talk. My wife said yes.
And then it happened.
The news that changes you.
Changes your family.
Changes your outlook almost immediately.
Cancer.
Fucking cancer.
This post isn’t about cancer. It’s about what happens after life punches you square in the face and you decide things can’t keep going the way they were before.
Let’s just say we are incredibly lucky to live in Canada. Our healthcare system is remarkable. The team at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton was nothing short of amazing. The doctors, nurses, and support staff understand something that only people in that situation truly appreciate: kindness matters when someone’s world just got flipped upside down.
The long story made short is this: the treatment worked.
My wife got that shit out of her body.
But that moment also started a completely new chapter in our lives.
We are incredibly grateful to the team at Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton for the care, kindness, and support Jenn received.

The “What the Hell Do We Do Now?” Phase
My wife, Jenn, hated her job.
That’s not an exaggeration. The stress, the anxiety, the environment. It just wasn’t a place she ever wanted to return to.
So naturally, we asked the most modern question possible.
We asked ChatGPT.
Basically:
“What the hell should we do now?”
The app started asking probing questions.
What did you enjoy about your last job?
What hobbies do you have?
What skills do you already have?
My wife had worked in childcare for years. She’s incredibly good with hands on creative work. Cutting, crafting, building things. The kind of stuff you naturally do when working with kids.
And then ChatGPT uncovered something I had almost forgotten about.
An old domain name I owned.
That led to another discovery: we had an older Cricut machine sitting around that could make stickers.
So we started there.
Nothing fancy. Just experimenting.

The Moment the Idea Got Weird
While we were working on stickers, I remembered something from years ago.
A prank mail item I had bought from an American website.
It was ridiculous.
And it worked perfectly.
The reaction from my friend was legendary, and to this day he still brings it up when we get together.
But that memory triggered a thought.
The only reason I had ordered from the United States was because there was absolutely nothing good in Canada offering something like that.
That was the moment the idea clicked.
Maybe we should build a Canadian prank mail company.
That was the moment we realized Canada needed its own prank mail company. That idea eventually became TheOneandOnly.ca
Well… at least it became my favourite Canadian prank mail website.

Learning Everything the Hard Way
Around this time I had taken some time off work to help my wife during recovery.
Turns out she didn’t actually need that much help.
So I ended up sitting in front of a computer.
A lot.
Armed with:
• AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude
• a Cricut machine
• a few helpful friends
• and an endless supply of YouTube tutorials
I tried to figure out things like:
• SEO
• GEO
• APIs
• Google Analytics
• SEMrush
• payment providers
• WordPress plugins
• and about 500 other things I still barely understand.
All I know is this:
I have put an enormous amount of hours into this project.
It’s been exciting.
Frustrating.
Confusing.
And surprisingly fun.
This whole experiment started in April 2025.
⸻
The Puck Drop
Somewhere along the way we started thinking about expanding beyond prank mail.
That’s when another ridiculous idea appeared.
The Puck Drop.
A real 6 ounce hockey puck with a sticker on top that says it’s an official Canadian apology. Masking tape around the edge. A message written in black Sharpie.

Simple.
Canadian.
Ridiculous.
The idea actually came from one of the strangest businesses I had ever seen online.
A company that mails potatoes with messages written on them.
And that sparked the thought:
Potatoes?
Seriously?
Well if people will mail potatoes…
Canadians should definitely be able to mail hockey pucks. Frankly, it might be the most Canadian form of communication possible.
Hockey.
Canada.
Authentic.
Now that felt right.

Starting a New Business in Your 50s
One thing I didn’t expect during all of this was that we were essentially starting a brand new business in our 50s.
Starting a business in your 50s was never part of our life plan.
That’s not usually when people decide to learn things like SEO, WordPress plugins, payment processors, analytics dashboards, and how to run an online store.
But that’s exactly what happened.
Most people assume starting a business is something you do in your 20s when you have nothing to lose.
Starting a business later in life feels very different.
You have responsibilities.
A family.
A mortgage.
A life that already exists.
But you also have something younger entrepreneurs often don’t.
Perspective.
We didn’t start this because we were chasing some Silicon Valley startup dream.
We started it because life forced us to stop and rethink what actually matters.
Health.
Family.
Enjoying what you do every day.
And honestly, starting something new in your 50s has been both terrifying and incredibly fun.
Some days I feel like I’m learning an entirely new language.
Other days I realize that a lot of the skills you build over decades like problem solving, patience, resilience actually help more than you’d think.
If anything, this whole experiment has proven one thing to us:
You’re never too old to try something new.
Sometimes the weirdest ideas… Like mailing prank packages or sending hockey pucks through the mail, are exactly the kind of projects that make life interesting again.
⸻
Where This All Goes
Do I know where this will take us?
Absolutely not.
Will it be successful?
Who knows.
Will people buy prank mail or hockey pucks with Sharpie messages written on them?
Also unknown.
But I do know this.
My wife is healthy.
We’re building something together.
And we’ve laughed more in the last year than we have in a very long time.
Honestly, that alone makes this whole ridiculous experiment worth it.
Everything else from here is just a bonus.
