Recognize the Little Things
Hockey Unsung Hero Award
An unsung hero award recognizes a player whose effort, reliability and support make the team better, even when those contributions do not appear on the scoresheet.
Choose a specific contribution. Explain why it mattered. Give the player a moment of recognition.

How to Choose the Winner
Consistent Effort
Keeps working through difficult shifts and responds constructively after mistakes.
Defensive Details
Covers assignments, backchecks and helps teammates recover possession.
Unselfish Decisions
Makes the useful pass or supports a play without needing the credit.
Support for Teammates
Encourages others, welcomes new players and helps the bench stay positive.
Learning & Improvement
Applies feedback and develops habits that help the team.
Quiet Leadership
Sets a helpful example through preparation, communication and respect.
Base the choice on examples you observed. Consider each player’s opportunities and circumstances. For an award focused mainly on effort, see hard hat award ideas.
Unsung Hero Player Examples
The Reliable Defender
Closes passing lanes, clears space and helps the team leave its zone.
The Supporting Forward
Backchecks, wins possession and creates opportunities for others.
The Steady Goalie
Communicates clearly and helps the team reset after a difficult goal.
The Helpful Teammate
Welcomes a rookie, shares advice or keeps teammates involved.
Any position can earn the award. Recognize what the player did, rather than how quiet or outgoing they are.

Short Messages
Your effort made us better.
Always there for the team.
The little things mattered.
Reliable every shift.
Team first, every game.
Your contribution did not go unnoticed.
Make It Personal
Add the player’s name, the season or game date, and one specific contribution. A clear reason means more than a long speech.
A Short Presentation Speech
“Our Unsung Hero Award goes to [Name]. Your [specific contribution] helped us [result]. We noticed the effort and support you brought to this team. Thank you for making us better.”
For example: “Your backchecking gave our defence the support they needed, and your encouragement helped our younger players settle in.”
These are wording ideas for a speech, card or keepsake. Our sticker packs use fixed printed designs. Find more hockey puck messages.
Make It a Team Tradition
Present the award after a game, each week or at the end of the season. Choose a schedule your team can maintain.
- Set the criteria. Name the contributions you want to recognize.
- Choose the recipient. Use a coach, captain or team nomination with a specific example.
- Explain the reason. Keep the presentation brief and personal.
- Record the moment. Note the player, date and contribution.
- Pass it on. Agree who brings a shared trophy back next time.
A traveling trophy stays with the team. A card or award puck gives the player something to keep.

Give the Player a Keepsake
When the contribution is about effort and determination, a Heart & Hustle puck makes a fitting keepsake. Add a sticker to your own clean hockey puck, then write the player’s name, date and opponent.
Each pack contains 20 premium, professionally printed stickers. The 2.74 inch round stickers fit the flat face of a standard hockey puck. Pucks and markers are not included.
The printed award reads Heart & Hustle. It is not a custom Unsung Hero design.
For a variety of award designs, see the Mixed Hockey Awards pack. Prefer a physical puck with a personal message around the edge? See The Puck Drop.
Unsung Hero Award FAQs
What does an unsung hero award mean in hockey?
It recognizes a player whose valuable contributions may receive less attention, such as defensive work, consistent effort and support for teammates.
Who should win the award?
Choose someone whose contribution matches your stated criteria. Explain the decision with a specific play, habit or example.
Can a leading scorer or goalie win?
Yes. The award is about overlooked contributions, not a position or a limit on scoring.
Is it the same as MVP?
No. MVP recognizes overall value. Unsung Hero highlights contributions that may be overlooked, although the same player can demonstrate both.
Should it be a weekly or season award?
Either works. State whether you are recognizing one game, a week or the entire season, then apply that scope consistently.
Do you sell the Unsung Hero design shown in the opening image?
No. That image is award inspiration. The featured product uses the Heart & Hustle design and has space for the player’s name, date and opponent.
Are hockey pucks included with the stickers?
No. Each pack contains 20 stickers. Supply your own hockey pucks and permanent marker.
