How to Choose the Winner
Game Impact
Look for a key save, defensive play, assist, goal or smart decision. Scoring is one contribution, not the only one.
Effort & Progress
Notice backchecking, puck battles and improvement. Tell players in advance if effort is part of the award criteria.
Teamwork
Recognize support for teammates, composure and unselfish play. Explain what the recipient did.
A coach can choose the winner, the team can vote, or the previous recipient can present the award. Use the same criteria each game and tie the decision to a specific contribution.
For youth hockey, include effort, progress and teamwork. For adult teams, agree on the meaning of the award and keep humour welcome to the recipient.
How to Present the Award
- Choose the contribution. Identify one play or habit that earned the award.
- Prepare the award. Fill in the puck sticker or bring out the shared team item.
- Explain the choice. Name the player and give the specific reason.
- Plan the next game. If the award rotates, confirm who will bring it back.

How do I make a puck award?
Apply a Player of the Game sticker to a clean, dry hockey puck. Write the player’s name, date and opponent with a permanent marker, then present it after the game.
